Oxford makes history with first and last football team
After one of its star players, Not MyName, the quarterback, sprained his finger and was put on rest by the doctor's note, the team was forced to surrender and end its seven — and counting — loss streak.
"You know, the important thing is we made history! There's never been another school to have to surrender all of their matches mid-season before, and I think that's something to be proud of," MyName said.
The team finished the season with several other accomplishments, from zero touchdowns to the longest group huddle. The players cited that the team's camaraderie and the dynamic of the game made this season memorable.
"You know my favorite thing about the game is that it feels like a game we're playing," said senior Jumb Dock. "We were outside, but now we're inside forever."
Their coach Paul Paul was especially proud of the progress the team made.
"I honestly didn't think there was going to be any interest at first, so when we met the minimum requirements, it seemed like this was going to be a game changer for Oxford. We really grew as a team. At first, nobody could make any touchdown at all. By the end, we still didn't make any, but they caught the ball sometimes. People might think that we didn't change much, but we had spirit and Patriot pride. And, accomplishments, after all, are relative," Coach Paul said.
Oxford's student body, however, mourned the early loss of its first football team.
"It felt like we were a normal high school for once. We almost made it to homecoming season, but in the end, our team did not come home. They lost all home and away games," senior Joorge Danyells said.
"I'm really proud I was a part of this team while it existed. It showed me the triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows of high school football," said junior ex-player Ned Oh.
The team, likely, will not return next year, but undoubtedly left a faint mark on Oxford's sports culture.
"Enjoy it while it lasts. It was a good game everyday, not really, but it felt like it sometimes," MyName said.
