The sapphic-to-straight pipeline: A growing threat to sapphic youth
Analysts trace much of the outbreak to the rise of #ilovemybf TikToks, where posts like, "He finally got me a boo basket!!!!!" are replacing the once-dominant #ihatemybf genre. Social media researchers warn that repeated exposure to such content may act as propaganda for impressionable sapphic youth.
Researchers have also turned their attention to what they describe as "For You Page Drift". Once a sanctuary of hyper-specific queer yearning, yuri content, and sapphic pop culture, many FYPs have now been reporting increasing exposure to soft-launch boyfriend posts and prom dress transitions. Tech analysts warn that the algorithm detects "emotional vulnerability spikes" and responds accordingly with straight propaganda.
Further, experts have also identified PWWD, an acronym for Post-WLW Withdrawal Disorder, most commonly observed in sapphics recently affected by heartbreak. Symptoms include: deleting Clairo and girl in red-heavy joint Spotify playlists with their former partner and a lack of #wlw in TikTok thirstrap captions. Patients of this disorder may end up signing up for a dating app after being ghosted by a girl or agreeing to coffee with the guy who refuses to believe that they are a lesbian. Researchers note that these actions may seem minute at first, but they are the first observable steps into the sapphic to straight pipeline.
Experts warn that unless these trends are addressed, this growing straight infiltration could, and will continue to destabilize previously thriving sapphic communities. To help resist this alarming trend, researchers suggest practical precautionary measures: rewatching lesbian media (ex: Yellowjackets), reintroducing carabiners into daily outfits, and at least 5 hours of listening to Clairo every day.
